What is visual storytelling?
Visual storytelling is the art of using images, graphics, and video to communicate a powerful message and evoke an emotional response.
There are many great examples of visual storytelling helping organizations grow and spread their message. One that is recognized across the world is the WWF black and white panda.
Visual Storytelling in Action:
The WWF Approach
"Our ambitious mission cannot be realised without gaining the trust and support of people around the world."
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) logo is a masterclass in visual storytelling. With a single, striking image, it captures the heart of their mission: conservation, care, and collective responsibility. The first version was crafted in 1961 by environmentalist and artist, Gerald Watterson and Sir Peter Scott, a WWF founder.
The iconic panda, inspired by a giant panda named Chi-Chi, wasn’t chosen just for its charm. It was an endangered species when WWF was founded, making it a living symbol of vulnerability. Its black-and-white markings made it easy to reproduce in early print materials, and its emotional impact has endured for generations. The logo invites empathy. It says, this creature needs protecting, and you can help.
WWF’s brand goes beyond logos. Their campaigns lean on powerful imagery to spark action. Rather than leading with data, they show us what’s at stake. A polar bear stranded on melting ice. A baby panda clinging to its mother. These images speak volumes, often paired with a simple message: This species is in danger. Here’s what they’re like. You can help.
It’s a reminder that the right story, told simply and visually, can move people to act.
